Na’Zir McFadden a 17 year old clarinetist and conductor from Philadelphia, PA attends the Abraham Lincoln High School and is president of the Fine and Performing Arts department. He is entering his senior year and is extremely excited to matriculate into a college conservatory of his choosing.
Na’Zir has participated in many musical ensembles throughout the tristate area. Some of which include The Philadelphia Sinfonia Organization, Philadelphia All City Orchestra, Philadelphia All City Concert Band, Temple University Creative Music Program, Rock to the Future Philadelphia, Youth Orchestra of Bucks County, Northeast Regional Music Festival, Abraham Lincoln High School Modern Band, The Major Keys Clarinet Quartet (through Project 440), National Take a Stand Festival Orchestra (through Los Angeles Philharmonic), and most recently The Curtis Institute SummerFest Young Artist Program.
Although Na’Zir is a devoted clarinet player, he also has a strong passion for conducting. On February 28th, 2017 Na’Zir won the opportunity of a lifetime. Na’Zir auditioned in front of hundreds of fabulous Philadelphia Orchestra fans and Assistant Conductor Kensho Watanabe, conducting an excerpt of Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. Later that night, music director of The Philadelphia Orchestra Yannick Nezet Seguin called Na’Zir to the center of the Verizon Hall stage and stepped off of the podium and claimed Na’Zir McFadden as “Pop Up Guest Conductor 2017”. Na’Zir conducted the POA in Offenbach’s Overture from Orpheus in the Underworld. When the piece was over Na’Zir recieved a standing ovation and a thunderous applaud from the crowd, orchestra, and of course Yannick. The Philadelphia Orchestra posted to social media a picture of Na’Zir, Yannick, and CEO of the POA with a caption stating “A Future Music Director is among, Na’Zir McFadden takes the stage leading the POA alongside Music Director Yannick Nezet Seguin”.
Na’Zir has been selected alongside a few other talented musicians to take part of the first ever Philadelphia Music Alliance for the Youth Artist Initiative. Na’Zir was ivited to Philadelphia’s City Hall where mayor Jim Kenney gave an inspiring speech about the excellence and extraordinary power of music. The Fresh Smiles Foundation has awarded Na’Zir with a schollarship to help with his goals of becoming a professional musician.
