My name is Karis Dharmawirya and I am 13 years old. The violin caught my attention when I was 4 years old and, when I was 5, my parents enrolled me at the Settlement Music School. I spent my first year studying violin under Mrs. Marka Stepper before she moved me to study under Mr. Lee Snyder during the summer I turned 6. This year I have also joined a string trio under Ms. Jean Louise Shook after being moved from my previous ensemble.
In more recent years, I received the Eric Anderson scholarship from the Settlement Music School, joined the Sounds of Young Philadelphia organization, and became a PMAY (Philadelphia Music Alliance for Youth) artist. Twice I represented my school, Phil-Mont Christian Academy, at the Association of Christian Schools International competition as an instrumental soloist and received the highest score both times. Additionally, through The Primavera Fund and PMAY I had a wonderful opportunity to play in a masterclass given by Mrs. Rachel Barton Pine.
Over the summer, I attended Csehy Summer School of Music for a week and studied under Mrs. Deborah Klemme, the violinist of Christian hymn writers Keith and Kristyn Getty.
Lastly, I enjoy playing violin with other musicians at my church. A few years ago, my church quartet was privileged to play with Christian artist Michael Card. I also like playing piano for my church’s choir and my school’s middle school jazz band.
