Spencer Ellington Chambers, Classical and Jazz Bassist
Spencer Ellington Chambers started playing double bass when he was six, in September of 2016. His mother Belinda Chambers sought out local Suzuki teacher Heather Miller Lardin, and together it took the two of them several months to locate an instrument Spencer's size (1/16th) and put it into his hands. Since then, he's been all about that bass. After studying and practicing for nearly two and a half years, Spencer auditioned and was accepted into the Juilliard Pre college Program at age 9 as a Double Bass Major. Spencer is currently in his 4th year at Juilliard. He is currently studying Classical Double Bass. with Mr. Timothy Cobb. Spencer will continue his studies at Juilliard Pre College in the Fall of 2022. He will continue his Jazz Bass studys with Bassist Gerald Canon. Spencer frequently performs with Philadelphia Clef Club Jazz Ensembles for Martin Luther King Day at The African American History Museum and Cedar Park Jazz Festival. He also attended Jazz House Kids summer 2019, performing at Dizzy’s Jazz at Lincoln Center and the Montclair Jazz Festival.
Spencer participated in the Young Bassists Program at the International Society of Bassists Convention in 2017 as the Society's youngest member and again in 2019. While he was there, he attended and played in masterclasses and informal lessons with many giants of the bass world including Rufus Reid, Christian McBride, John Clayton, Mimi Jones, Ron Carter and many others. In 2021 he was the recipient of the 2021 International Society of Bassist Young Bassist Program Kolstein bass.
Spencer's musical idols and inspirations include Joseph Conyers (The Philadelphia Orchestra), Christian McBride, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, and Ray Brown. He is the youngest of eight children in Berwyn, Pennsylvania. When he's not playing his bass or finishing up seventh grade, Spencer enjoys reading the Keeper of the Lost Cities series of books, playing Chess and playing video games. His favorite food is pizza and he has an enviable collection of fedoras. When he grows up, he wants to be the best bassist in the world. He dreams of being both a famous bassist and an actor.
